About Sauvie Island Kennels
In the early 1950s, our property was better known as Lake Tree Kennels and housed working retrievers. Over the years, the kennels and its ownership changed hands many times. In 1988, Tim and Angela Schillereff acquired the property from their relatives, Elden “Red” and Marguerette Persinger and began a total renovation and remodeling of the buildings.
Still located across from Sturgeon lake and surrounded by trees, Sauvie Island Kennels is nationally known as a premier boarding and training facility serving the greater Portland metropolitan area and beyond. We specialize in obedience training, upland bird dog training, AKC Canine Good Citizen classes and premier boarding services for all canine and feline breeds.
Tim and Angela Schillereff, together with their sons Nick & Tyler, daughters-in-law Christine & Maggie and their experienced and attentive staff, strive to provide a warm and caring environment for their boarding and training guests.
You are invited to come by and visit us for a tour! You do not need a reservation to tour our facility. Swing by at your convenience during our office hours. You are welcome to bring your dog with you for the tour. We are open Monday- Friday 9am-5pm and Weekends 10am-4pm. Our office is closed on all major holidays.

About the Founders & Owners
Tim Schillereff
As a youth growing up, Tim loved wild bird hunting and the great outdoors. He learned to train dogs with his grandfather, who had several Brittanies and an English setter. As a teenager, he trained hunting dogs professionally under the guidance of Jim Charlton, of Charlton Kennels. In addition to working the bird dogs, he established and managed an all breed obedience training program. Over the years, Tim has owned numerous breed of hunting dogs including Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Brittanies, Springer Spaniels, English Setters, German Shorthairs and Pointers.
In the early 1980s, Tim began to compete and campaign dogs professionally in the AKC, NGSPA and AFTCA field trial circuits. He has finished over 60 Field Champions and his clients have successfully earned Amateur titles with their dogs under his guidance. He has to his credit earned National or Regional titles on several different breeds including the English Setter, Pointer, Brittany, Weimaraner, German Shorthaired Pointer and the German Wirehaired Pointer. From his and Angela’s Pointer breeding program, carrying the TIAN prefix, Sauvie Island Kennels has produced eight National and five National Amateur Field Champions, and numerous Open and Amateur Field Champions.
Tim’s judging credentials include the Pacific Coast Championships, National Chukar Championship, NGSPA National Championships, GSPCA Nationals, GWPCA Nationals, VCA Nationals, AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championships, California Quail Championships, NGSPA Region 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 Championships, and numerous weekend AFTCA and AKC field events.
In recent years, Tim’s youngest son Tyler Schillereff has begun to take over the reins of the hunting dog training and field trial campaigning. Tim also farms an array of crops and raises a herd of beef cattle with his oldest son Nick Schillereff at the Schillereff’s Oak Island Farms. When not training or competing, Tim enjoys waterfowl hunting at his hunt club on the island, Candy Store Duck Club and spending time with his family. In December 2023 he and Angela celebrated 35 years of marriage.
Angela Schillereff
Born and raised on a family farm with two older brothers, one of her daily chores as a young girl was the care of the farm animals including the family hunting dogs, all Elhew pointers. While her brothers were off at football practice, Angela assisted her father in the training and conditioning of the dogs for the upcoming hunting season. She enjoyed the dogs so much that she dreamed of becoming a vet some day.
Angela graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in Business Management and Marketing and had worked up the corporate ladder to be operations officer and assistant branch manager for First Interstate Bank, which is now Wells Fargo. She met her husband, Tim, while he was working at a local kennel, training dogs and managing the place. She began to help at the kennels and train with him and quickly decided dogs would be her career instead of banking.
Angela has performed various club duties including field trial secretary, chairman, treasurer and board member for various local and national organizations including the Cascade Pointer Club, GSPC of Washington, NGSPA Region 10 Championships and the American Pointer Club. She served as the Oregon Director for the Northwest Field Trial Council in the years of 1990-94 and APC Treasurer from 2003 to 2006. Angela cares about her community and also served as an elected official on Scappoose School district board of education. Present positions include the chairman of the APC National Field Trial Championships and director on the board of the American Pointer Club.
Angela is a licensed AKC field trial and hunting test judge. She has judged local and national trials and tests on both the East and West coasts. She was the first woman to judge the AKC All Breed Pointing Dog Championship held in 2005 at Milepost 9 in Idaho. She has had the honor to judge National Field Trial Championship events for the Irish Setter Club of America, German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America, German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, American Pointer Club and the All Setter Classic.
When not working at the kennels or on the farm, Angela enjoys chasing her adventurous travel bug, hosting delicious dinners for family and friends, supporting her kids in all their endeavors and spending time with her horses, dogs and family.
